Undergraduate Programs

In support of the mission of the Department of Workforce Education and Development, the purpose of the Education, Training and Development (ETD) specialization is to prepare occupationally competent people in the areas of instruction and learning, HPI program development and management and supervision. Graduates would qualify for human performance improvement (HPI) positions in corporate, apprenticeship, proprietary, government, military, post-secondary and volunteer education and training organizations, as well as, community colleges and other post-secondary vocational-technical institutions.

ETD graduates are prepared as technical instructors, occupational analysts, curriculum designers, curriculum writers, personnel supervisors/managers and other HPI related positions.

Goals

The goals of ETD are to have the students:

Gain an understanding of the role of human performance improvement (HPI) and the role and responsibilities of HPI specialists in the workplace;;
Acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills of HPI specialists;
Increase the students employment opportunities in the areas of instruction and learning, curriculum development, and personnel supervision and management; and ; and
Establish a basis for advanced study in one or more of the three above areas or in related areas of study.

Objectives

The objectives of the ETD specialization are to have students:

Demonstrate written, oral, visual and computer-related communications skills in organizing and presenting thoughts and ideas as concerns the preparation, presentation and implementation of performance improvement programs and learning materials;
Demonstrate a basic understanding of and ability to prepare curriculum, deliver instruction and assess student learning in classroom and laboratory education and training situations;
Demonstrate a basic understanding of and ability to manage workplace education and training programs and provide leadership to individuals and groups concerned with instruction and learning;
Demonstrate occupational competence by way of documented technical/professional training and work experience.

Clientele

Primarily, ETD serves graduates of Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science degree programs. However, students who have not completed a two-year degree program, but meet the SIU University Core (general education) requirement, plus the ETD professional sequence, technical/professional training and work experience requirements, also qualify for graduation.

Prerequisites

To satisfy the prerequisites of the ETD specialization, prospective students must:

Be coded in the ETD undergraduate specialization (WE 3 or C 17) or have declared a minor in ETD;
Have successfully completed 15 semester hours of University Core courses which includes English Composition 101 and 102 and Mathematics 108 or equivalent with a "C" grade or better in each of the three courses;
Have a defined occupation; and
Demonstrate occupational competence by way of documented technical/professional training and work experience.
