Recommended Computer Specifications 

Your first priority should be to acquire a dependable and reliable computer. Without the proper tools, you can neither complete your below-the-line or above-the-line courses. Both sets of courses require internet access and e-mail accounts. If you are considering purchasing a computer or if you already have a computer, here are the minimum recommended specifications that your computer should have:

PC (Microsoft Windows compatible)

  • Pentium 3 or higher
  • 256 megabytes of RAM or higher
  • CD drive
  • USB port for a flash drive (optional)
  • 16-bit sound card and speakers

  • Screen resolution 1024 x 768

  • 65,000-color video display card

  • 56 kilobyte modem or higher (e.g. DSL connection or cable modem)
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP) provider – SIU, AOL, Earthlink, NetZero or others
Software
  • Microsoft Windows operating system (2000 Professional or newer with XP highly recommended – do not get Windows ME)
  • Microsoft Office 2000 or newer (Standard or Professional) – to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook – 2003 recommended
    • Notes:
      • Outlook Express is free with Windows
      • Due to compatibility problems with electronic document submission, Microsoft Works, WordPad and Notepad are not recommended
  • Virus software (McAfee Virus software available free from SIU at ftp://ftp.siu.edu/antivirus)
  • Internet Explorer version 6.0 or newer
