APA Editorial Guidelines

WRITING TOOLS

The APA Publication Manual is not a how-to book for writing a research paper, thesis, or dissertation. Rather, it is one of several different writing tools required to complete an academic research report. The various tools needed, and the rationale for each, are explained below.

  • Editorial style: Use the APA publication manual as the guide to editorial style (see page 77 for an explanation of what is meant by "editorial style"). The APA Manual omits general rules on editorial style. For needs not addressed by the APA Manual, the Chicago Manual of Style is recommended.
  • Writing style: Chapter 2 in APA is a good summary of general principles of expository writing. Additional references are provided on pages 369 and 370. Elements of Style is particularly recommended, an online version of which is available by clicking here.

Many other online writing tools are also available. A good place to start is the Purdue University OWL which contains excellent materials and numerous links to related references such as "Handouts and Materials."

  • See also a listing of Writing Labs and Writing Centers on the Web.

  • Preferred spelling: The first consideration is that words should be spelled correctly. Always use a spell checker, which is probably included in your word processing software. The APA Manual specifies the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary as the standard spelling reference (see page 89), an online version of which is available by clicking here
  • Correct word: When trying to express the correct word, substitute a more formal word, or add variety to writing, turn to a thesaurus for help. An online version of Roget's Thesaurus is available by clicking here
  • Final draft: The SIUC Graduate School has written guidelines that must be followed regarding contents, typing, duplication, and the like. A copy of the guidelines can be obtained at Woody Hall B135 or on the Web by clicking here. Should APA guidelines ever conflict with Graduate School guidelines, the latter takes precedence.
