 Access and Essential Tools

Web Browser
Mozilla Firefox is recommended for use with all OCDP courses. It is available free online and the latest version for both Windows and Mac systems may be obtained here.

Adobe Acrobat Reader
A number of courses utilize content that is the portable document file format. Adobe Acrobat Reader must be downloaded and installed in order to view these files.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer
If Microsoft PowerPoint is not installed a PowerPoint viewer must be downloaded and used to view all presentations.

Computer and Connection Specifications

A computer meeting the following specifications will be required to successfully complete the requirements of this course. Specifications covering both PC compatible and Apple MacIntosh systems are covered (hardware and software), as well as Internet connection speed. Please keep in mind that the following represents the minimum recommended system specifications.

PC (Microsoft Windows compatible)

Hardware

• Pentium 3 or higher

• 256 megabytes of RAM or higher

• CD drive

• USB port for a flash drive (optional)

• 16-bit sound card and speakers

• Screen resolution 1024 x 768

• 65,000-color video display card

• 56 kilobyte modem or higher (e.g. DSL connection or cable modem)

• Internet Service Provider (ISP) provider – SIU, AOL, Earthlink, NetZero or others

Software

• Microsoft Windows operating system (2000 Professional or newer with XP highly recommended – do not get Windows ME)

• Microsoft Office 2000 or newer (Standard or Professional) – to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook – 2003 recommended

• Notes:

• Outlook Express is free with Windows

• Due to compatibility problems with electronic document submission, Microsoft Works, WordPad and Notepad are not recommended

• Virus software (McAfee Virus software available free from SIU at ftp://ftp.siu.edu/antivirus)

• Internet Explorer version 6.0 or newer
