Your first priority should
be to acquire a dependable and reliable computer. Without the proper tools, you
can neither complete your below-the-line or above-the-line courses. Both sets
of courses require internet access and e-mail accounts. If you are considering
purchasing a computer or if you already have a computer, here are the minimum
recommended specifications that your computer should have:
PC (Microsoft Windows compatible)
Hardware
Pentium 3 or higher
256 megabytes of RAM or higher
CD drive
USB port for a flash drive (optional)
16-bit sound card and speakers
Screen resolution 1024 x 768
65,000-color video display card
56 kilobyte modem or higher (e.g. DSL connection
or cable modem)
Internet Service Provider (ISP) provider – SIU,
AOL, Earthlink, NetZero
or others
Software
Microsoft Windows operating system (2000
Professional or newer with XP highly recommended – do not get Windows ME)
Microsoft Office 2000 or newer (Standard or
Professional) – to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook – 2003 recommended
Notes:
Outlook Express is free with Windows
Due to compatibility problems with electronic document submission,
Microsoft Works, WordPad and Notepad are not recommended
