Frequently Asked Questions

"Flexibility" is the key word in Southern Illinois University's Bachelor of Science degree program in Workforce Education and Development. The college program is designed to fit the needs of the military person. 

The following are some frequently asked questions about our program:

Are you required to have an Associates degree?

No. In fact, you may enroll and later complete the 41 credit hours in the general studies area. Also, credits may be obtained through PACE, CLEP General Exams, DSST's, and/or traditional classroom instruction.

How long is the SIUC, Mayport program?

The program is 12 months for the professional sequence of courses.

What if I transfer to another base before I complete the program?

We have the Workforce Education and Development degree at 16 locations in the United States. (7 Naval Bases)

Can afloat personnel complete the program?

Yes. The 12 month program is divided into three semesters with three terms per semester. It is possible to complete a semester, go to sea, and resume your education upon your return.

What kind of financial aid is available?

If eligible, there are G.I. Bill, tuition assistance, Pell Grants, and student loans. In addition, the state of Illinois has a special grant for Illinois Veterans.

Will I get any credit for my military schools?

Yes. SIU awards credit for your military experience and technical schools.

Where and when are the SIU classes conducted?

The classes are held every other weekend from 0800-1600, Saturday and Sunday at the Navy College Office, Bldg. 460, Naval Station, Mayport.

Who else is eligible for enrollment in this program?

Any student, with a completed course in college English may be considered for the program.
