Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of standardized achievement tests
  • List the ways that educators use standardized achievement test scores
  • Define norm group and norm-referenced tests
  • Differentiate between raw scores and derived scores
  • List and explain the meaning of each of the scores used in norm-referenced interpretation of standardized achievement test scores
  • Identify the weaknesses associated with the use of each type of score
  • Compute mean and median
  • Identify the mode in a set of scores
  • Convert standard scores to percentile ranks, z-scores, and t-scores using a normal curve
Introduction Standardized achievement tests are widely used throughout education as a method of assessing and comparing student performance. This module focuses on explaining what standardized tests are, as well as how to interpret test scores. While standardized achievement tests have no direct application in the fields of training and workforce development, it is important to be familiar with the various ways to interpret test scores and understanding the statistical information that is gathered from these tests.
